Sie leben auf einem der schönsten Friedhöfe der Welt, die Katzen des „Cimitero Acattolico“ in Rom, früher auch „Protestantischer Friedhof“ genannt, nahe der Cestius-Pyramide. Viele Künstler fanden hier ihre letzte Ruhe, meist jung gestorben, mitten heraus aus ihrem künstlerischen Schaffen: John Keats, sein Freund Shelley, Gottfried Semper, Goethes Sohn August, der Politiker Antonio Gramsci, um nur einige zu nennen. Seit Jahren befindet sich neben dem Friedhof ein Asyl für herrenlose Katzen, die von freiwilligen Helfern gefüttert und medizinisch versorgt werden. Diese Katzen leben wie selbstverständlich zwischen den Gräbern, es ist ihr Lebensraum. Der Bildband würdigt die Schönheit dieses Ortes mit seinen lebendigen Bewohnern. Er vermittelt die über dem Friedhof liegende melancholische Harmonie von Vergänglichkeit und natürlichem Dasein.

Uta Süße-Krause studierte ab 1979 Fotografie und Film in Köln und war bei verschiedenen Fernsehsendern an Sendungen für Kinder beteiligt, so beim WDR an der Sendung mit der Maus. Von 1998 bis 2000 lehrte sie Fotografie im Fach Kunst an der Pädagogischen Hochschule in Heidelberg. Sie arbeitet seit 1989 als freie Fotografin. Im Michael Imhof Verlag erschien 2010 ihr Fotoband „Cellisten“.

The Cats of the “Non-Catholic Cemetery” live in one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. Once known as the “Protestant Cemetery” it is situated near the ancient Pyramid of Caius Cestius in Rome. Many well-known people including numerous artists are buried there: John Keats, his friend Shelley, Gottfried Semper, Goethe’s son August and the political thinker Antonio Gramsci, to name but a few. For some years there has been a refuge for homeless cats next to the cemetery and the charity’s volunteers feed and give medical aid to the cats who live in a semi-feral state amongst the tombstones in the cemetery garden. This photo-book of images of the cats in their natural context perfectly captures the melancholy harmony between those who have passed on and the living inhabitants, the
spiritual guardians of the deceased.

I Gatti del Cimitero Acattolico vivono in uno dei più bei cimiteri del mondo. Precedentemente conosciuto come il Cimitero Protestante, quest’ultimo è situato vicino alla piramide Cestia a Roma. Molte persone famose inclusi numerosi artisti sono sepolte qui: John Keats, il suo amico Shelley, Gottfried Semper, il figlio di Goethe, August, e il pensatore politico Antonio Gramsci, solo per nominarne alcuni.
Da diversi anni, accanto al cimitero, si trova un rifugio per gatti “homeless”. Un’organizzazione di volontari nutre e offre aiuto medico ai gatti che vivono in uno stato semi-selvatico tra le tombe del giardino del cimitero. Questa raccolta di immagini dei gatti nel loro contesto naturale, cattura perfettamente la melanconica armonia tra coloro che sono mancati e gli abitanti felini, i guardiani spirituali dei defunti.
